“The Pythagorean tradition that persisted throughout the Middle Ages and early Renaissance defined consonance in numerical terms. The intervals that were products of string-length ratios expressible by the number one to four were consonances; the rest were dissonances.” - Claude Palisca, “An Italian Renaissance in Music?”
